Wij zijn verbaasd en verbazend! Binnen een week hebben wij
een hele school verhuisd, de meeste leslokalen ingericht en alle struiken en
bomen overgeplant. Wij zijn er klaar voor. Kom maar op leerlingen en de Thaise
Ministerie van Onderwijs. Beide komen maandag.
De week was een mengelmoes van chaos, frustratie, plezier en
tevredenheid. Het is een enorme klus om een school te verhuizen met slechts een
staf van vrijwilligers en leerlingen, terwijl de verbouwing nog doorgaat. Toch
was de sfeer nooit explosief; op zijn tijd wel wat gestrest maar altijd
positief. Iedereen wist uiteindelijk wat er gedaan kon worden en deed het, en
keek toe wanneer de volgende dag het overnieuw werd gedaan, realiserend dat het
wel noodzakelijk was. Misschien was het de eerste keer niet goed genoeg gedaan of
dat het rode zand het vereiste om de volgende dag het weer over te doen of
misschien allen om het feit dat je toch iets moet doen om de uren van de dag te
vullen. Toch toen ik vrijdagmiddag om 15.00 naar huis ging, was ik er van
overtuigd dat maandagochtend de lessen gewoon door konden gaan.
Helaas is het ESL lokaal nog niet klaar. Tot die tijd deel
ik en mijn collega het kantoor van een administratieve medewerker. Men zegt dat
het binnen twee weken klaar zal zijn maar ik houd het op 7 weken dan wordt ik
niet teleurgesteld. Maar kijk wat een geweldig uitzicht ik zal hebben. Zal ik
wel mijn gedachten aan mijn werken kunnen houden? Tijd zal het leren.
Deze week zijn ook mijn eerste Nederlandse gasten geweest.
De dochter van een oud collega en vriendin is samen met haar vriendin 3 dagen
in Chiang Rai geweest. Het was bijzonder om op te merken terwijl ik hen de stad
liet zien dat ik daadwerkelijk wist waar ik was en hoe ik overal heen moest
komen. En dat voor 2 maanden in dit gebied…niet gek!
Vrijdagavond was een eerste potluck etentje met collega’s.
Dit evenement heb ik bij vele vriendinnen in Nederland geïntroduceerd.
Ontzettend gezellig en lekker. Hopelijk zal het een wederkerend gebeuren zijn.
Misschien willen anderen ook mee gaan doen.
We are amazed and amazing! Within a week we have moved a
whole school, organized most
of the classrooms, and planted the shrubs and trees. We are ready for classes
and the Secretary of Education of Thailand, who will be visiting on Monday.
The week
was a combination of chaos, frustration, enjoyment and satisfaction. It’s a
major undertaking to move a school with only a volunteer staff of teachers and
the students, while construction is still going on. Yet, the atmosphere was
never explosive, perhaps strained at times but continually positive. Everyone
finally figured out what he or she could do, did it and watched someone else
doing the same thing again the next day but realizing that it was necessary.
Perhaps it hadn’t been done right the first time, or the red sand forced the
task to be redone or just because one has to do something to fill the hours of
the day! Whatever the reason, when I left at 15.00 on Friday afternoon, I was
convinced that come Monday morning we would be able to have classes in our new school
building.
Unfortunately
the ESL classroom is still under construction. Or maybe it will be someone
else’s classroom; this is still a bit up in the air. For the time being the ESL
teachers will be sharing the office space of the one of the administrative
workers. They say 2 weeks, I’m counting on 7 so that I won’t be disappointed.
But look at the view; this makes the waiting worthwhile. Will I be able to
concentrate on my students? Time will tell.
This week I
also hosted my first Dutch visitors. The daughter of one of my former
colleagues and friend came for 3 days with her backpacking girlfriend. While
showing the sites of Chiang Rai, I was pleasantly made aware of the fact that I
knew where I was at any given time. Such an achievement for being here only 2
months!!
My first
potluck has taken place. I’ve introduced this phenomena to many friends in Holland
