Hong Kong

As I wait for my flight out of Hong Kong, I look back on 2½ wonderful days of sightseeing in Hong Kong. My impressions are mixed. Hong Kong is huge and totally overcrowded.
It has a fantastic public transportation system. Busses, taxis, subway, ferries and high speed boats. They are all ridiculously cheap compared to Holland. But this is the strategy to keep the private cars on the road to a bare minimum.

The city is connected by shopping malls. You can’t take a turn without running into another one with very high-end products. Great for the shopaholics among us who have abundantly filled wallets.

Despite the great amount of concrete raising to the stars, there are many hills of greenery surrounding the city and many parks and trees among the buildings. It makes the city livable.
The time was well spent with my friend and colleague. We reviewed our year together in Chiang Rai and looked forward to a new year of teaching: Tracy in Chiang Rai and for me in Harderwijk.
In the meantime I have arrived at my hotel for the night in Bangkok. Just a few more hours and I will be home.
 
Terwijl ik wacht op mijn vlucht uit Hong Kong, kijk ik terug op 2½ geweldige dagen In de megastad. Mijn indrukken zijn gemengd. Hong Kong is giga groot en totaal overbevolkt.
Er is een buitengewoon openbaarvervoersysteem. Bussen, taxi’s, metro, ponden, hoge snelheidsboten. Belachelijk goedkoop in vergelijking met Nederland. Maar dit is de strategie om privé auto’s terug te dringen.
De stad is aan elkaar geregen door shopping malls. Overal zijn ze te vinden met dure producten. Voor een shopaholic een paradijs maar dan wel met een goed gevulde beurs.
Ondanks een overvloed van beton is er veel groen te bespeuren tussen de gebouwen en op de heuvels. Het maakt de stad leefbaar.
De tijd in Hong Kong was goed besteed met mijn vriendin en collega. Wij hebben het afgelopen jaar samen doorgenomen en het komend jaar besproken: Tracy in  Chiang Rai en ik in Nederland.
Het is inmiddels een aantal uur later. Ik zit in mijn hotelkamer in Bangkok. Over een 24 uur ben ik weer thuis.
